A new home, a crowd-puller and a premiere in Basel

Five days of hospitality are in the offing from 23 to 27 November 2013 at Igeho, Mefa, Lefatec and the Salon Culinaire Mondial. The architecturally outstanding new complex at Messe Basel makes it possible to arrange the 886 exhibitors from some 15 countries compactly and attractively over a surface area of 73 000 m2. In combination with the prestigious competition for team cooking, the Salon Culinaire Mondial, which is to be staged in the new Event Hall, and the newly-launched Lefatec, the Igeho exhibition and the Mefa specialist fair now have a more comprehensive and attractive programme to offer than ever before. For the very first time, it is possible for the whole value-added chain, from the production of foodstuffs through to their marketing, to be showcased in a single location. A truly memorable event packed with highlights is thus awaiting the trade visitors (estimated to total 80 000) from the hotel and catering sector, from the care sector, including homes and hospitals, from the meat trade and from food manufacturers and retailers.

Igeho – World of Interiors, World of Coffee and numerous other Highlights
The sophisticated design segment of Igeho has been given the title of “World of Interiors”. In its magic atmosphere, trade visitors will be able to take a close look at the trends in interior design that are doubtlessly already influencing the equipment of hotels and restaurants or are set to do so in future. Inside the “World of Interiors” there are also a networking lounge (the ideal place for lively discussions) and the Igeho Forum. That is where Heinz Margot, a Swiss television presenter and himself a former restaurateur, is going to conduct discussions on issues such as profitability, renewable energies and ways and means of reducing food waste.

The new “World of Coffee” is presenting an incredible concentration of coffee know-how on a surface area of 5 000 m2. As an innovative feature of this coffee world, various partner organisations and companies are offering visitors the chance to take a thematic tour through the whole section. The tour starts at the “World of Coffee Bar” and calls in on nine stations, each one dedicated to a different aspect of coffee: sustainability, aroma innovation, Swiss quality during roasting, importance of the water used for preparing coffee, fair trade, optimum aroma, what gives coffee its taste, mixed coffee-containing beverages and grinding coffee.

The official host region at Igeho 2013 is Appenzellerland. The two half-cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden have set up a joint stand on 600 m2, where they are presenting themselves as attractive tourist destinations, while local producers are offering traditional delicacies and innovative specialities to the exhibition visitors. In addition, a typical music group in traditional costumes is going to be playing every day, and a dulcimer player will be performing a selection of solo pieces.

Mefa – synergies with the meat trade
The principal attraction at Mefa is “the longest meat counter in Switzerland”. On this are presented the results of the quality competition for meat and sausage products organised every four years by the SFF (the Swiss association of the meat trade). More than 500 award-winning meat products are on display, and it is possible to sample some of them too. What young specialists in the meat sector are capable of once they have completed their training is demonstrated in the Swiss championships in the “Metzgerstübli” by those who came out top in their apprenticeships. The “Metzgerstübli” is also the place to go to enjoy the atmosphere created by live music even after the fair has closed.

Lefatec – our premiere
Lefatec, the new specialist fair for the food industry, is an ideal complement to Igeho and Mefa. It offers food producers and processers a platform they won’t find anywhere else in Switzerland, covering all the crucial technical facets and thus focused on the meat and catering sectors. So, the three platforms all organised in parallel make it possible to portray the entire value-added chain in a single location – from the production of food through to its marketing. It is particularly worth taking a look at the special display of Swiss cheeses designed to resemble a market, under the title of “La sélection de fromages helvétiques”. Selected Swiss cheese makers will be presenting their specialities for tasting and will also be offering them for sale.

Salon Culinaire Mondial
By contrast with the Igeho exhibition and the Mefa and Lefatec fairs, which are reserved for trade participants, the prestigious Salon Culinaire Mondial is also accessible to private individuals. Its unchallenged culmination is the international competition between national teams of cooks from Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, South Africa, Germany, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Italy, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. Their exquisite set meals hot out of the kitchen can be sampled by the general public subject to a prior reservation from 11:30 onwards every day in the “Restaurant des Nations” specially set up for the Salon Culinaire Mondial. The cold show features artistic gastronomic creations not only from the national teams but from other teams and individual exhibitors from more than a dozen countries as well. The guests invited to the talk shows held in the spectators’ arenas include star chefs such as Ivo Adam, Daniel Bumann and Anton Mosimann, and upcoming young talents are also presented.
